Mandela Denounces US

Nelson Mandela has denounced the United States as a "threat to World Peace" based on its miscalculated support for authoritarian groups, from backing the Shah of Iran in the 1970s to building up the Islamic fundamentalists in Afghanistan back in the 1980s.

The amusing part of the interview is that Mandela sees Bush as a captive of Dick Cheney, who as Mandela notes, was one of the few Congressman back in the 1980s to support Mandela's continued imprisonment.

It is interesting that those denouncing Saddam's lack of democracy today were his supporters back in the 1980s, along with being backers of the racist Apartheid regime. Add this the fact that as Mandela points out, there is no proof that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction, while it is well documented that Israel has nuclear weapons-- the double standard on that issue just adds to the lack of credibility of the US in the region and the world.
