Ecuador May Join Brazil, Venezuela
Amidst the news of Lula's win in Brazil, lost from most international news was the surprise front place victory of left populist Lucio Gutierrez in the first round of Ecuadorean elections. In 2000, Gutierrez helped lead a revolt by the largely indigenous peasant population of the country to oust a corrupt older regime.
While Gutierrez lacks the assurance of Lula's democratic credentials and is more likely to emulate the more erratic behavior of Venezuela's Chavez, the vote does reflect the broad discrediting of neoliberal economics across Latin America.
