Amandla! Revolution in Four-Part Harmony

It is hard to describe the brilliance and depth of this movie, exploring the history of the struggle against Apartheid and the songs that accompanied that struggle-- or rather the songs that were almost inseparable from the struggle itself.

This is a film of surprising humor as well as tragedy, brilliantly interweaving historical background and discussions of how song allowed black South Africans to defy authorities in ways they could not contain.

And tears came to my eyes as Nelson Mandela was elected President, a revelation of a film that can remind us of the wonder that is democracy for a people who had to struggle for it for so long.
