January 16, 2005NY Times: SocSec Immigration Projections OffEmphasizing one of my favorite themes on social security, the NY Times in this piece notes that the official long range forecasts for social security make an assumption about immigration that is ridiculous: Though immigration has been rising, Social Security projects that it will taper off sharply, from 1.2 million a year to 900,000 in 20 years. This forecast is curious, because if the birthrate in America declines as anticipated, the country will need more foreign workers.More and younger immigrant workers mean there will be plenty of people paying taxes into the social security system.
