Daschle Buries Another Tax Giveaway

Having killed the estate tax giveaway to the wealthy, Senate leader Daschle has announced he will bury a $500 billion "marriage penalty" extension of last year's tax cut passed yesterday by the GOP-controlled House. The Center on Budget Policy Priorities has a good analysis on why this legislation is so skewed to the wealthy.
...So the Senate Dems have saved about $1 trillion for social programs in two days of work. Not a bad return on progressive support for the party.

That is good... But right now, the Democrats are on defense. They've gotten good at it, but you can't win, long term, if you don't have some sort of policy other than "holding the line". All the GOP needs to do is win once, because the Democrats can't restore anything once it's lost. Or at least, they haven't for a quarter century now.
